Hosta

I would think hosta is an essential perennial for the northern garden. A perennial bed with hostas only can be boring (unless you are a hosta addict), but a perennial or conifer bed without hosta can be even more boring. It can add an element of large leaf textures that are often absent in northern vegetation (in comparison with tropical environment). It can take full sun to full shade, and is hardy and maintenance free (practically). Unfortunately, it is often expensive, takes years to develop a nice clump, and deers like it.
We started to selectively acquire some hostas in the last couple of years. Although a large selection is available, we do not believe that many of them are distinct enough to lust for. We are not desperate enough to try to acquire large clumps at a high cost (most of the time), and yet we are not particularly keen to wait for several years for small mail order divisions to grow into landscape size clumps. It is a tough call. In any case, most of our new acquisitions tend to be 'smallish'.
